Sugar, Honey
Gwen Stefani has been in the public gaze for over 20 years, entering as a vocalist for No Doubt and soon after embarking on a (successful) solo career that saw her cemented in our minds as a pop princess of our generation. Over the years Stefani has taken on many endeavours – songwriter, fashion designer, actress and television personality – but her most recent role as an ambassador for Revlon means something extra special to her as she has been a fan of brand since she was a little girl. As someone who has been a beauty muse since the ‘90s for her signature brazen red lip and porcelain skin, Stefani candidly chats about her signature style, her earliest make-up memories and why the oh-so-in-love singer is the perfect candidate for the Choose Love campaign.
What does it mean to you to be named a Revlon Global brand Ambassador?
I don’t even know how to absorb such an incredible honour. It’s such a big deal. I can’t believe I get to be the Revlon ambassador, especially at this point in my life. I’ve always been a fan of Revlon. As a little girl, going to the drug store and going down the makeup aisle, was one of my favourite things to do, ever. And now that I get to indulge in every single product that Revlon makes and be part of such an incredible, creative company with such a positive message – I feel so honoured.
What is your typical beauty routine?
There is no typical “routine” for me. Every day I get up in the morning and I wash my face and put on some moisturiser. I literally and genuinely love doing makeup so there is no one beauty look that I typically stick to.
What does beauty mean to you?
I think beauty comes from within. It’s a smile. Kindness. Joy. Positivity. Love.
Who is your beauty icon?
I always had a love for old Hollywood and Hollywood glamour and seeing images of Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow and anything vintage. I think the first time I wore red lipstick was when my grandmother gave me for Christmas, a multi color lipstick tube of all different colours and there was a dark, almost like a burnt red – a really deep red and I tried it on. I remember exactly where I was. I was sitting in my car, in the driveway and I put it on in the rear view mirror.
What is your philosophy on love?
I think I’ve always been a positive person, almost naively. I’ve had to reconnect with myself spiritually in the past year and I think consciously choosing love has been a big part of that process. Revlon’s Choose Love campaign is filled with choices and positivity so I feel like that’s aligning exactly with where I’m at in my personal life.
Can you name three things always in your beauty bag [i.e. mascara, lipgloss, hand cream, etc.]?
I genuinely love doing makeup and experimenting with different looks, so there is no one beauty product that I typically stick to. On some days, I could wear brows and lips and that would be it. The Revlon ColorStay Brow Crayon is quick and easy to use and it stays put all day. I love a bold lip. Today, I’m wearing the red shade I wore on my last shoot, which was Revlon’s Super Lustrous Love That Red. I always need to have something for my lips. I think that’s probably one of the most important things for me. I’m a fan of the new Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara. It really creates an oversized lash look and is water resistant, which is perfect for my busy lifestyle. The Revlon 2 IN 1 Kajal Eyeliner has a great angled tip and there’s a smudger on the other side which makes doing your eyeliner quick and easy.
Favourite skincare products?
I keep it really simple with my skin care routine. I generally try to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen under my makeup everyday. I wash with a simple cleanser that takes everything off my face at once and then I use a moisturiser. Once in a while if I’m being fancy, I like to do a little exfoliation as well.
What is your diet and exercise regime?
My diet and exercise regime changes quite often. It changes with my mood. I enjoy running on the treadmill or outside. I like a typical gym workout. In the last few years, i think that i had to make room for some other exercise, which i call spiritual exercise. It’s a super important balance that i found and something that is equally important to me as doing physical exercise.
Do you have any secret/favourite beauty tricks?
Secret favourite beauty tricks is MAKEUP. Makeup and filters. [Laughs] That’s my honest answer.
How has music influenced your fashion/beauty style?
Music to me is such a huge part of my life. Along with music, I love how fashion and style helps to express my personality and mood. Music is sort of the inside and fashion and beauty is the outside.
Pre-show treatments?
Pre-show for me is really just about putting makeup on. Feeling the confidence and getting prepared to come out and be the most honest and to share my story and connect with people.
