It’s important to get a variety of perspectives on the world. We only ever see one side of anything, with multiple perspectives we can finally start to see the full picture of what is happening.
The Siena Drone Photo Awards brings together a cohort of international photographers, amateurs, emerging talents, enthusiasts, and all those who love culture with a decidedly different perspective, literally. Aerial photography and video used to be the domain of a lucky few. But now just about anybody can strap a camera to a drone and fly it over life in all its messy glory. That isn’t to say that drones are the only method that was used. The collection of following images uses a mix of fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, balloons, blimps, dirigibles, rockets, kites and parachutes to get the job done. As long as it’s up high it’s being considered.
Swallowed The Artemia pleasure boat stands marooned in the dried bed of Lake Urmia, Iran—trapped in a crater eerily shaped like a monster’s belly. Years of drought, mismanagement, and agricultural overuse have drained the lake, leaving behind symbols of its forgotten past. Lake Urmia (Iran), Mohammad Ataei MohammadiFog Sea Tower Shadow Captured by a DJI drone near Tianjin West Railway Station in China, this work combines three images, achieving visual impact and completeness. It was taken during heavy fog, which adds a sense of technology to the central building. The perspective shifts from the expansive surroundings to the architectural details. Tianjin (China), Zhèn Wěi LǐGolden Gate Park During a flight over San Francisco, this symmetrical division between Golden Gate Park and Outer Sunset neighbourhood, separated by Lincoln Way, was captured during golden hour. The photo was taken from the open window of a small plane. San Francisco (USA), Alex VisbalDhaka City, an urban panorama This is a panoramic photograph of the Buriganga River, which runs through Dhaka. The polluted waters of this busy river are visible, along with the chaotic and overcrowded construction on each bank. An impressive city that never rests, filled with deafening noise. Dhaka (Bangladesh), Fran ArnauEdge of Stillness From above, a quiet flock of ducks marks the fragile boundary between frozen silence and open water. Shot in the heart of winter, this image captures nature’s elegant geometry—where life arranges itself instinctively along the shifting edge of ice. Nyékládháza (Hungary), Helga UrbánThe Lone Horseman During the magic of blue hour, a lone rider stands atop a rocky outcropping in the heart of Cappadocia. Taken on the very first evening during Dennis’s winter trip, this photo showcases the beauty and mystery of Cappadocia in all its glory. Using his drone, Dennis managed to find a unique and breathtaking perspective that had never been captured before in this often-photographed landscape. Cappadocia (Turkey), Dennis SchmelzScale An aerial view of two massive icebergs floating in deep blue Arctic waters deep within Greenland’s massive fjords, with their submerged portions glowing turquoise beneath the surface. A small sailboat in the distance adds scale and serenity to this striking polar seascape. Greenland, Thorarinn JonssonTumble In the Güroymak district of Bitlis, villagers take their animals to nearby hot springs to increase their milk yield and clean them, regardless of the winter conditions, and while they ensure their animals are happy in the 40°C water, they also enjoy the moment. Bitlis (Turkey), İbrahim ŞİmŞekInto the abyss This photo was taken during an elopement photoshoot. An amazing location was found: a bridge over a large ravine in an ancient Italian town. The dark and gloomy sky, combined with the picturesque ruins in the background, created the perfect setting for this cinematic image. Gravina in Puglia, Apulia (Italy), Tim DemskiSheep Herding, Switzerland Sheep returning from summer pasture in the Aletsch Glacier are herded down a footpath that was blasted out of a sheer canyon wall after the glacier retreated in the mid-20th century. Prior to that, they could access the high summer pasture by walking across the ice that once filled the canyon. Valais (Switzerland), George SteinmetzRunning on Salt Runners push forward as the first light of dawn breaks over the Dead Sea. The photo was captured during the Dead Sea Marathon, and this moment reflects both human endurance and the surreal beauty of the lowest place on Earth. The Dead Sea, Shimon PerlsteinAnother World This is a top-down drone capture of a fever of cownose rays dividing a school of menhaden fish. Taken just off the coast of Southampton in August, the sky was clear and the sea was calm, allowing the sunlight to enhance the waters’ depth and the bursting sand clouds. Southampton, New York (USA), Joanna SteidleEthereal Encounter Flying the drone along the remote North West coastline, Matt spotted the spectral shape of a critically endangered Green Sawfish emerge from the cloudy water and swim through a group of sea turtles, before disappearing back into the depths of the tidal lagoon. Although this job is difficult, they adapt to all conditions as fishing is their livelihood. Lake Beyşehir, Konya (Turkey), Esengül Alıcı Biber
