One Night Only
Imagine The Purge but it was about getting laid. That’s my elevator pitch for One Night Only. This is a romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck (Anyone but You, Easy A, Friends With Benefits) where single people are only allowed to have pre-marital sex once a year. How are you supposed to find genuine connection with someone on this one night? Sure you can get your rocks off but genuine love is much harder to come by. Starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as the awkward hot will they won’t they couple. The pair felt happy with the chemistry they struck on set. “I think the gentle ribbing that these two characters get into felt second nature.” Barbaro told Extra.
Callum added, “That’s kind of how they fall for each other, right? That ribbing each other and taking the mick and the banter because they don’t think they’re going to end up together or they don’t want to be together, so they’re on their side quest for other people and that allows them to do the banter and explore each other that way.”

The Dog Stars
Based on the best-selling book, The Dog Stars follows the newest Hollywood heartthrob Jacob Elordi as Hig who’s the last pilot on earth looking for human connection in the post-apocalypse. Risking his life he meets Margaret Qualley’s character Cima. The book is a love letter to nature and the beauty of life as it struggles on with moments of explosive action and horror. I suspect the movie will be much the same, with perhaps a lot more on the action side of things.

Sense And Sensibility
The 1995 version is hard to beat but here goes another shot at Austen’s classic tale of love and sisterhood. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the sisters with George MacKay playing The Guy. Edgar-Jones gravitated toward Elinor telling Vogue “because I relate to her, and I love characters who navigate the world like I do. But I’ve also played a lot of introverted, soulful people. I’m very interested in playing someone big, arch and villainous as well. I would rather, as I’m getting older, take a really bold swing in the wrong direction than play it too safe.”
The film is directed by Georgia Oakley, whose one credit is Blue Jean which won her Best Debut Screenwriter.

Klara & The Sun
Jenna Ortega has been typecast for so long as a scream queen not smiling sort that seeing her play a robot who plasters on the biggest fake smile you have ever seen is even more disquieting than it would be normally. The film is based on the best selling book of the same name written by Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro. Personally I’m more interested that it’s directed by Taika Waititi. Big Hollywood blockbusters aside I personally think smaller, weirder character driven films set in the middle of nowhere like this are where Taika’s strength lies. The movie was shot around Auckland and Wānaka in early 2024.
Klara and the Sun centres on an artificial friend Klara (Jenna Ortega), who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home since she’s destined for the scrapheap. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams) and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.
